Unused pull holes are plugged and filled flush, and fresh holes are bored with a jig so the pulls sit level along each run. Tired hinges can be changed to soft-close models while the doors are down for cabinet painting.
New hardware is the cheapest visible change in a kitchen, and it is the first thing people notice after the paint. We list it on the quote as its own line with a count, so you know exactly what it costs.
Most 2000s kitchens in Churchill Meadows came with brushed nickel bar pulls, usually at one or two standard hole spacings. If your new pulls use the same spacing, they drop right into the old holes. If they do not, we fill the old holes and drill new ones.
We drill once the primer is on but before the final topcoats. Any small chip at the edge of a hole gets filled and buried under the final cabinet painting coats. Each hole is located with a jig, not measured door by door, because a pull sitting slightly low is easy to spot from across the room.
When you switch from a bar pull to a knob, or to a longer pull, the old holes need to go. This small step is part of almost every cabinet painting job we do in Churchill Meadows, because so few owners keep the original nickel bars. We plug them, fill them, sand them flush and prime them. After cabinet painting, you cannot find them.
This is where a painted door has an edge over a stained one. On a stained door, a filled hole always shows. Under paint, it is gone.
A door that drifts open or slams shut has worn hinges, and adjusting them rarely fixes it for long. Most kitchens built here in the 2000s use European cup hinges, and soft-close versions fit the same cup hole. Swapping them during cabinet painting adds very little labour, since the doors are already down.
Soft-close drawer slides are a bigger change, because they involve the boxes as well as the fronts. We can price them, but they are a separate line from the hinges.
The paint colour and the pulls should be chosen together. Brass and warm gold have become the most asked-for finish, and matte black is common on modern kitchens. The right choice depends on the paint colour. Brass on a warm white reads differently from brass on a cool grey, so a sample door helps.
Pull length changes the look as much as finish, and it does not change the cabinet painting price. A long pull on a wide drawer reads modern, while a cup pull or a short pull looks more traditional. Matching pulls to paint colours is covered in cabinet colour consultation.
A handle tightened onto a soft finish presses its outline into the paint. That is why hardware goes on last, after the doors are hung and the hinges are adjusted. The same final pass is when every gap is squared up, which is the detail that makes cabinet painting look finished instead of just coated.
